I was charged with ault with a deadly weapon!!!?

Im from Mexico and in 1992 i was in vacations in california in a bar when some guys started to hit one of my friends, when i tried to split them, the bouncers came and start to hit me too!!!, when they were taking me out the place i told the owner that i was going to sue him, my surprise was that outside the bar was the police and they arrested me under the charges of asault with a deadly weapon against one of the bouncers, im not a fighter or martial arts expert, but they put me in jail anyway, when i told my lawyer all the facts about this he told me to plead guilty and i will receive not more than 1 year at county jail, i treid by any means to explain i was not guilty but no one heard me, so i pay the bail, $ 10,000 dollars and i left the country, my question is, what could be my actual status? Can i go back to the states? Its a crime prescription after 16 years? What should i do? Thanks
