Portia’s desire to ert her role as empowered wife is first witnessed through her reactions to each of her potential suitors. After evaluating all six initial suitors, Portia contrives conclusions with which to justify why each suitor falls short in her estimation. It is here that the common theme of Portia’s rejection to each potential suitor is evoked, presumably with the underlying premise that each of these suitors do not secure her desired and privileged position as empowered woman to which she is acquainted.
